Co-founder of Atlas Camps, James blends his background in teaching and leadership with a genuine passion for creating childcare that is trusted, inspiring and full of energy.
With a strong focus on structure, safety and positive experiences, James plays a key role in shaping programmes where children feel confident to try new things, build friendships and enjoy every moment — while parents know their children are in capable, caring hands.
In 2016, four years after the birth of Atlas Camps, James took the leap to join the company full time as Director, bringing with him a wealth of experience from his years in education and leadership. His background in teaching, mentoring and team development has been instrumental in shaping the caring, professional and people-focused culture that defines Atlas today.
As a founding Director, James has played a key role in building Atlas Camps into one of the region's most trusted childcare providers — helping the organisation achieve an Ofsted 'Outstanding' rating and a reputation for delivering high-quality, engaging childcare that families love. He continues to take great pride in leading a passionate leadership team that shares his belief in creating positive experiences for both children and staff alike.
Working alongside his business partner Dan, James remains as driven as ever to grow and evolve the company — developing new ideas, strengthening partnerships and ensuring Atlas continues to set the standard for exceptional childcare across the region. With a clear focus on sustainability, quality and long-term impact, he is committed to building an organisation that supports families, empowers staff and creates meaningful opportunities for children to thrive.
After graduating from the University of Gloucestershire, James began his professional journey at Beaufort School in Gloucester — now known as Holmleigh Park — where he initially took up the position of Cover Supervisor. It was here that his natural ability to connect with young people and inspire them through sport quickly became evident. His enthusiasm and commitment to education soon earned him a place on the school's PGCE programme in Secondary PE, marking the start of a rewarding career in teaching.
Following his qualification, James accepted a full-time role within the school's PE department, where he spent the first seven years of his career. During this time, he rose through the ranks from PE Teacher to Head of Boys' PE, and ultimately to Director of Faculty as part of the school's leadership team. Each step reflected not only his skill as an educator but also his ability to motivate others and drive positive change across the department.
These formative years in education gave James a deep understanding of what makes great teaching — structure, enthusiasm and care — principles that continue to guide his leadership at Atlas Camps today. He consistently applies these foundations to ensure programmes are well organised, engaging and delivered with the same high standards he championed throughout his teaching career.
James' journey in sport began at Hartpury College, where he studied for a Diploma in Sport - Performance and Excellence. Immersed in a culture of high standards and shared ambition, he developed a strong foundation in coaching, leadership and teamwork — and it was here that his friendship with his now business partner, Dan, first began. Their shared passion for sport and helping young people reach their potential would later become the spark that inspired Atlas Camps.
Building on this foundation, James went on to study BA (Hons) Sports Coaching and Development at the University of Gloucestershire, where his enthusiasm for both coaching and teaching grew even stronger. His degree provided the platform to work closely with young people in schools and community settings, shaping his understanding of how sport can be a powerful tool for learning and personal growth.
During his time at university, James' passion for teaching was truly cemented — guiding him naturally into a career in secondary education. These early experiences not only deepened his commitment to helping children thrive but also laid the groundwork for the educational values that continue to underpin his work at Atlas today.
